Medicare Advantage (Part C)

What are Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare Advantage plans (also called Part C) are an alternative to Original Medicare. These are plans offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

These plans provide you with benefits included in Original Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) and can include Part D (prescription drug coverage). Some Medicare Advantage plans include additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing services and even fitness programs.

What are the Benefits of Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare Advantage plans replace your original Medicare Part A and B coverage and benefits. In addition to potential cost savings, these plans may provide qualified individuals with more access to benefits or features.

Some advantages include:

  • With Original Medicare, you typically pay a 20% coinsurance once you've met your deductible. These expenses can add up! With Medicare Advantage plans, you have fixed copays for doctors visits.

  • Many Medicare Advantage plans have a $0 monthly premium.

  • Medicare Advantage plans offer flexibility - your coverage and plan benefits are specific to the plan that you select

Medicare Part D

What is Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D is offered by private insurance companies and provides prescription drugs.

When do I need Medicare Part D?

  • Many Medicare Advantage Plans already include Part D prescription drug coverage.

  • Medicare Supplement (also called Medigap) plans do not include prescription drug benefits. Enrollment in a Part D plan with your Medicare Supplement will provide prescription drug coverage.

  • Original Medicare does not include prescription drug coverage. Enrollment in a Part D with your Original Medicare will provide prescription drug coverage.

How much is Medicare Part D?

There are typically two types of costs with Medicare Part D:

  • Plan premium

  • Prescription drug costs

Each plan has a list of drugs that they cover called a "formulary." Many plans divide medications into "tiers." Each tier typically costs a different amount.

A licensed agent can help you estimate your costs and find a plan that meets your needs. There are also savings programs and other options (such as preferred pharmacy networks) to help reduce your costs.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

What are Medicare Supplement plans?

Medicare Supplement plans are an alternative option to Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Supplement plans are also called "Medigap" plans because they fill in the 'gaps' not covered by Original Medicare. Original Medicare only covers 80% of your Part A and Part B expenses. The remaining 20% costs can be devastating if you have a serious medical illness.

What do Medigap plans cover?

Medigap plans provider coverage for copays, coinsurance and deductibles.

Medigap plans may cover most or all coinsurance costs for:

  • Inpatient hospitals

  • Skilled nursing facilities

  • Hospice care

  • Part-time home health services

They may cover coinsurance or copay costs for Part B medical services and equipment including:

  • Doctors visits

  • Outpatient procedures

  • Durable Medical Equipment

  • Lab work

There are several important advantages provided by Medigap plans including:

  • Nationwide coverage - your plan is accepted anywhere that takes Medicare

  • No networks or prior authorizations - you can choose any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare

  • No referrals required to see specialists

  • No claims paperwork - all claims are filed automatically on your behalf

What do Medigap plans not cover?

While comprehensive, Medigap plans do not cover:

  • Dental, vision and hearing benefits

  • Prescription drug coverage

Medigap plans are often paired with a standalone Part D plan to provide prescription drug coverage.

Beneficiaries enrolled in a Medigap plan may choose to add an ancillary plan to cover dental, vision and hearing benefits.

What are the types of Medigap plans?

Medigap plans are differentiated by their plan letter.

There are 10 types of Medicare Supplement plans that are offered in most states. These types of plans are named by a letter: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N.

Every plan letter offers the same coverage. The only difference between plans with the same letter is their price!

There are some differences with Medicare Supplement plan standardization in Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
